Equipped Podcast: Episode 013: Vonda Hogle, Toledo Ohio
Vonda is a single mother of two amazing daughters (the episode tells the story about this journey). She has also traveled the world doing missions work. She says, “I try to live the quote by St. Francis of Assisi – ‘Preach the Gospel always, and when necessary use words.’ and …Wish I could have business cards that say “Vonda Hogle, Righteous Queen of Funk”.
Highlights from Episode 013
In 2008 Vonda was on the phone with a friend who challenged her to have an honest conversation with God about adoption. He said, “you won’t even let God tell you no because you are unwilling to ask Him.” It was this statement that stopped Vonda in her tracks. Within a week of praying, she found herself at a conference where they were praying about adoption and James 1:27 was read. It was at this point that God began to speak to her.
“ Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” James 1:27 (NIV)
There was an entire list of reasons why Vonda felt like she could not adopt but God told her that He was bigger than all of them.
Vonda agreed to start walking through any open doors that God provided. As she walked through open doors, with obedience, God began to work on her heart. Not only this but God provided all of the resources that she was lacking during her journey through the foster care training and home study.
One day she got a call about a 3-year-old little girl
Within a week of approval, Vonda found herself with a small child living in her home. After a short period of time, she had to make a decision about adoption. Vonda became a mother, but this was not the end of their story.
Obedience before the heart is fully engaged
When obedience comes out of trust for God, He will honor that obedience. We must discover our motivation for obedience, is it trust? As she took steps of obedience God changed her heart.
- obedience has a beginning
- obedience is better than sacrifice does not negate sacrifice: God wants our obedience and our sacrifice – if we are obedient it will take sacrifice
- it’s ok to take a step back in the midst of obedience and recalibrate
- in obedience, God will not allow us to be in a place where we are comfortable
- The first step of obedience & courage is sometimes just admitting what our fears are
- it’s ok to make mistakes
“I run in the path of Your commandments, for You will enlarge my heart.” Psalm 119:32

Taking a trip to Haiti
Vonda takes a group to Haiti, to work in an orphanage. There was one little girl that grabbed a hold of Vonda’s heart and she was determined to find out who this little girl was. With her heart ripped open she came back to the United States, without knowing if there would ever be an opportunity to connect with this young girl. It was not too long after this encounter that the government changed their laws for adoption and Vonda finds out that she would become a mother once again. God provided everything she needed every step of the way.
“God is the only one who could have put our family together”
Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is. For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit. Jeremiah 17:7-8
